#Curriculum and Teaching

Q: Are the subject curriculums based on the curriculums of the Ministry of Education?

Our curriculums cover more than the scope of the Ministry of Education’s syllabi for the year 2019. Incorporating modern educational approaches such as STEAM while strengthening character development, the depth and breadth of the content of the students’ learning will exceed the curriculum of the Ministry of Education through the modularization of students’ learning process and the improvement of learning tools and methods.

The institute will continue to apply for the development of junior and senior high school experimental education. In the near future, graduates from Guandu Hua Wen Institute will be able to enroll directly in our junior and senior high school. With our enriched curriculum, our students will have a significant advantage in applying for schools whether abroad or at home.

Q: How is Guandu Hua Wen Institute preparing its students for higher education?

Guandu Hua Wen Institute places students at the center of learning, fostering both character and knowledge. In addition to cultivating strong attitudes and proactive actions, we integrate The Leader in Me—the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People—to help students develop self-management and leadership skills for the future. We envision every student “knowing themselves and influencing others,” building a learning culture that is warm, purposeful, confident, and action-oriented. Through the daily practice of character building and habit formation, students gain the ability of learning how to learn, continuously exploring and advancing knowledge across disciplines, and demonstrating strong competitiveness in higher education.

  • Domestic: Our solid teaching, effective learning methods, and rich learning content accelerate students’ learning process and help prepare our students for studying at the next level. Our arts, sports and community service programs can also give our students an advantage when applying for schools.

  • Abroad: To strengthen English proficiency, students receive eight English lessons per week taught by foreign teachers, supported by a bilingual homeroom system. The presence of foreign homeroom teachers ensures daily immersion in English and unrestricted practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In the afternoons, subjects such as physical education and the arts gradually increase English instruction based on student readiness.Hua Wen encourages students to take Cambridge English exams, beginning with YLE Flyers in elementary school, FCE in junior high. For our high school students planning to apply for universities abroad, we have an International Program to help our students pursue their studies overseas.

Q: Will our students have homework assignments?

Pre-class lesson preview and after-class review are essential components of our curriculum design. Moderate amount of homework assignments allows us to evaluate and assess students’ progress. Our teachers assign homework that engages a student’s writing and thinking skills. A wide range of diverse assignments makes learning interesting and fulfilling.

Q: Will there be examinations and class ranking?

The institute does not use grades as the sole criterion for evaluating children. Multiple Assessment Method is used to evaluate our students’ learning outcomes. Summative assessments are conducted twice a semester, with methods such as written and oral exams, reports, presentation, and exhibition; and students are allowed to retake tests.

The institute also has an app with not only communicative functions but also students’ assessment that includes behavioral performance, work outputs, group collaboration, and publication, etc.

Corporal punishment has no place at Hua Wen. While corporal punishment may lead to short-term compliance, studies have shown that it is ineffective over the long-term and leads to negative outcomes. Our institute places great importance on character education, guiding students to naturally internalize positive values in their daily lives. In a supportive and respectful environment, healthy relationships between parents, teachers, and students help prevent bullying from taking root.

Teachers remain attentive to students’ well-being and interpersonal interactions.
